The first week of the youth entrepreneurship teacher trainings offered by the Northern Marianas College’s Small Business Development Center was a success with seven teachers from Chacha Ocean View and Hopwood junior high schools, and Kagman and Marianas high schools receiving training in the use of the Making Cents Business Ventures curriculum.

These seven teachers participated in a week of intensive training, learning more about entrepreneurship education and how they can educate and empower their students to recognize opportunities, take risks, and develop lifelong skills to broaden their career options and strengthen their communities. All of the teachers who participated in the training plan on using what they have learned and the curriculum kits provided to enhance their class offerings.

A second week of training, focused specifically on the elementary school level began yesterday, Aug. 22, and continues through Friday, Aug. 26, 2005. Twelve teachers representing Kagman and Dandan elementary schools will have their chance this week to learn more about experiential-learning, the importance of entrepreneurship education, and how it can be integrated into their classes. Shoshana Hecker, program manager and trainer from Making Cents International based out of Washington, D.C., is facilitating the training sessions.

The seminars are part of the Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative the SBDC is advocating to foster in youth an understanding of, interest in, and competence around entrepreneurship. The SBDC believes that entrepreneurial education is important to the success of the CNMI community and is committed to providing educators with not only the tools, but also the skills for them to effectively provide our youth with entrepreneurship lessons that will prepare them for the future and the real world.

This educational opportunity is sponsored by the college, through a grant from the Department of the Interior, Office of Insular Affairs. For more information, contact Rosario Hocog at SBDC at (670) 235-1551.
