EMO, USGS report fluctuating volcanic activity
Seismicity on Anatahan increased for about seven hours over the weekend, indicating escalating activity.
However, the Emergency Management Office and the U.S. Geological Survey said tremor levels ranged between 30 and 50 percent of peak levels.
Ash emissions continue, and the agencies said an ash plume rose to about 24,000 feet and extended northeast on Saturday, citing a pilot report at about 2:10pm.
The agencies said two weather disturbances affected the plume’s direction last weekend—tropical storm Mawar and tropical storm 12W. Late in the afternoon on Saturday, the plume moved north initially, and then veered to the east.
Yesterday morning, the agencies estimated the ash plume’s height at around 15,000 feet. They said the plume moved to the north and was expected to continue moving in that direction or northeasterly over the next 18 hours.
The agencies reported no seismic activity on Sarigan. Last Friday, they said the seismic swarm that was recorded on the island had tapered down, with more than 705 earthquakes occurring for over a week. (John Ravelo)
