Covenant Party candidates, led by standard- bearer House Speaker Benigno R. Fitial and Vice Speaker Timothy P. Villagomez, trooped to the Election Commission office on Capitol Hill yesterday morning to formally file their candidacy and petitions.

“We’ve gathered petitions for each candidate more than what’s required,” said John Del Rosario, Jr., chair of the Committee to Elect Ben and Tim.

He said the party has also filled its entire slate for this year’s election.

Party chair Martin Manglona beamed with confidence about the party candidates’ chances in the elections.

“We are strong. And we’re ready to win this election,” he said.

Aside from the Ben and Tim tandem, the party endorses the candidacy of former senator Juan S. Demapan for Washington Representative and Rep. Clyde Norita for the Senate.

For the House of Representatives, the party supports labor hearing officer Jacinta Kaipat, Public Safety’s Rose T. Ada, former Commerce director Jesus C. Muna, Herman P. Sablan, and Juan C. Deleon Guerrero for Precinct 1. Precinct 2 candidates are incumbent congressmen Oscar M. Babauta and Jesus Lizama. For Precinct 3, Covenant Party endorses Francisco S. Dela Cruz, Melvin O. Faisao, Absalom S. Waki Jr., Herman L. Macaranas, Enrique K. Rabauliman, and Rep. Ray Yumul. Precinct 4 has Gonzalo Santos.

The party supports Edwin P. Aldan for a House seat for Tinian and incumbent congressman Crispin M. Ogo for Rota.

For the Senate, the Covenant Party has incumbent senator Joseph Mendiola and former Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board member Joaquin H. Borja for Tinian; and Felix Mendiola and Jovita M. Taimanao for Rota.

The party’s mayoral candidates are incumbent mayor Juan B. Tudela for Saipan, Tobias Aldan for the Northern Islands, Jose P. San Nicolas for Tinian, and Joseph S. Inos for Rota.

All candidates showed up at yesterday’s group filing of candidacy on Saipan. They then proceeded to the residence of chairman Manglona in Kagman for a group lunch.

The Election Commission’s deadline for filing of candidacy is on Aug. 16.
