Chavez stands out in national speech contest
Calvary Christian Academy 6th grade student Krystele Anne E. Chavez won fifth place in a national speech tournament held in San Antonio, Texas earlier this week, beating out over 80 other competitors from across the nation for the top five plum.
The 11-year-old impressed the audience with her declamation piece, “Is it a crime for a citizen of the United States to vote?” by women’s right activist Susan B. Anthony during the Middle School Forensic League National Speech and Debate Tournament 2005 held in San Antonio, Texas on June 24 to 26.
Krystele said she was actually sick during the entire competition.
“I felt very weak. It’s a good thing my dad was with me the whole time. We would pray together. I really thank God because I made it to the tournament,” she said.
She was accompanied to the competition by her coach and teacher Marilee Norman, CCA principal Scott Norman, and her father Elmer M. Chavez.
“I’m really thankful for their support and also my mom who keeps praying for me,” she said.
Krystele made it to the national tournament after winning the MSFL-CNMI competition in April.
Her mom, Saipan Tribune’s Bing Chavez, said she’s very proud with what her daughter was able to accomplish. She also said that what made her fifth-place finish more outstanding was the fact that her daughter was a little under the weather during the competition.
Bing also said that she felt a bit sad that she wasn’t able to accompany Krystele in Texas to support her. She joined her family in thanking their church, Saipan Community Church, for praying a lot for Krystele’s success in the tournament. (PR)
