A 2-year-old boy was found dead inside a Chalan Kanoa home’s septic tank, police said yesterday.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Eric David said the septic tank was filled with water. The facility contained no wastewater yet, as it was still under construction. Police have yet to ascertain if the boy died of drowning Sunday morning.

David said investigators have no disposition yet whether or not to charge the boy’s guardian. He said the child’s body is scheduled for autopsy on Friday.

He declined to give the child’s identity.

Preliminary police investigation disclosed that the boy was playing outside the house while his mother was raking leaves from the yard.

The boy’s 8-year-old cousin shouted for help about half an hour later. The cousin reportedly discovered the boy inside the septic tank and jumped into it in efforts to help the toddler. The mother came running and helped recover the boy, who appeared to have stopped breathing.

Police and medical personnel responded to the scene after the DPS received a telephone call from an unknown person. Efforts to revive the child’s breathing appeared futile.

Minutes later, medical personnel rushed the boy to the Commonwealth Health Center, where he was declared dead on arrival by an attending doctor.
