10 teams confirm play in Masters
A total of 10 teams have already confirmed participation in the upcoming Masters Basketball League, according to BANMI president Mike Muna.
During an interview Tuesday evening, Muna said the league has already secured confirmation of six teams for the 35-and-over division and four for the 45-and-over category.
Unlike in the years before, though, Muna said the league will call the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium its home, giving way to the upcoming BANMI Budweiser Cup and the Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League, both of which will occupy the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, which also houses action in the BANMI 25-and-under and Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Co-ed basketball leagues.
According to Muna, the 35-and-over crown will be on the priority list for the Chalan Kanoa Legends, Ol’Aces, Northern Marianas College Proa, Top Thirty’s, Pacific Trading Co. Dew Dew’s, and a team organized by veteran Tony Sablan.
Teams vying for supremacy in the 45-and-over division include the Legends, Ol’Aces, Proa, and Dyna-Sores.
Also, players in the 45-and-over category can play for teams in the 35-and-over division, however, 35-and-over division players cannot suit up in the 45-and-over.
Muna added that teams from both categories will also compete against one another, however, wins and losses for their division standings will only count when playing a team within their division.
Muna said other teams can still take part in the league and must submit an entrance fee of $500 payable to BANMI by May 27. Each member of the roster must also pay a $5 membership fee.
The 2005 season is tentatively scheduled to begin on May 27, with games held Fridays and Saturdays.
