Sasaki reigns in RGA May Ace
Not only was Sasaki Oliver’s performance at the recent 2nd Annual Marianas Tourism Education Council Golf Tournament at the LaoLao Bay Golf Resort impressive, it was also good for another title.
With the win, the Pride of Pohnpei also topped all participants competing in the Refelawasch Golf Association May Ace of the Tournament, which coincided with the MTEC last Saturday.
Oliver’s swings off the tee and soft touches on the green were impressive as he got his run started with a 34 on the front nine.
The local golf top gun remained poised during the second half of his day on the golf links, firing a 35 on the back nine to finish with a three-under par 69. His score was lowered to 65 courtesy of his 4 handicap.
With the RGA win, Oliver took home $60 to go along with the $400 from his MTEC victory in the Championship Flight.
Finishing second in the RGA competition was Joe Demapan, who was good for a 36 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine for a four-over par 76 gross score, but his 10 handicap enabled him to edge veteran Eddie Peter with a net score of 66.
Peter, meanwhile, finished the day at even par after posting a 38 on the front nine and 34 on the back nine. His gross score was reduced to 68 with his 4 handicap.
Demapan’s performance was also good for third place in the MTEC A Flight. He went home with $50 from the RGA, while Peter had $40 on hand. He placed second in the Championship Flight of the MTEC.
In all, 13 RGA members participated at the MTEC. Joe Wabol (71 net score), Ben Duenas (72 net score), and Tony Satur (73 net score) capped the top six placers.
Also spending their day at the popular golf course were Jess Wabol (75), Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho (75), Nick Sablan (75), Joji Taguchi (79), Sonny Flores (80), and John Mettao (81).
Mettao had the score to beat before Oliver’s run after posting a 67 in the qualifying.
