270 students to graduate from NMC
Some 270 students will receive their diplomas, certificates, and degrees as Northern Marianas College holds its 25th commencement exercises on Saturday.
In addition, 27 individuals will be receiving their master’s degrees from two U.S. institutions at the graduation ceremony that will be held beginning 4pm at the Marianas High School gymnasium.
On Saipan, NMC will confer 108 degrees. Twenty-six of these degrees are for Bachelor of Science in Education graduates, while the remainder is for a variety of associate degrees.
Dozens of certificates of completion and achievement, as well as diplomas for General Education Development and Adult Basic Education, will also be given.
Further, Framingham State College will confer hoods on 23 recipients of Master of Education degrees. The San Diego State University will honor four recipients of Master of Arts in Education degrees.
NMC facilitates post-graduate programs for each institution, pursuant to separate agreements that the college had signed with them.
David Cohen, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s deputy assistant secretary for insular affairs, will grace the graduation ceremony as this year’s commencement speaker upon the request of the students.
As deputy assistant secretary, Cohen oversees the Office of Insular Affairs that administers the U.S. government’s relationship with the U.S. island states of American Samoa, the CNMI, Guam, and the Virgin Islands and the economic assistance provided to the freely associated states of Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands.
Before joining the Bush administration, Cohen was a partner in the law firm of Sidley, Austin, Brown, and Wood in Los Angeles, California. He holds Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, has authored two textbooks on business law, and holds the title Papali’i in Samoa.
