J-Lo vs J-Fo in a boring catfight
Monster-in-Law; 1:42; PG-13 for sex references and language; Grade: D
Jane Fonda should’ve stayed retired. In Monster-in-Law, J-Fo battles J-Lo to win the attention of their favorite man. J-Lo hopes to live a fulfilling life with her new fiancé, Mr. Right, while Fonda wants her son back. Both of them are willing to go to ridiculous heights to win their wickedly catty game of jealousy. I refuse to believe that any woman could actually be so spiteful.
Supposedly, all this hate is funny. While watching Monster-in-Law, though, the only way I knew when I was supposed to laugh was when the music went “boom-shucka-boom-shucka-tweedly-dee” or something to that effect. A laugh-track might’ve helped.
Jane Fonda is just as talented and magnetic as ever, and Lopez is THE hottest woman to ever grace our good Earth, but neither of them, nor the usually funny Wanda Sykes, can save this mess of a movie from the abyss.
When I watched it on Sunday afternoon, there were about 10 other people in the audience with me. I was the only man. I was also the only person not laughing. So, maybe I just possess the wrong genitalia to understand how funny Monster-in-Law really is. Or maybe this movie is just really, really boring.
And yes, it’s still magnificently ginormous.
