Intense week
The local sports scene was intense as it could ever get as athletes in various sports showcased their skills and performed the best they could.
Spearheading the week’s highlights was the recent McDonald’s All Schools Track and Field Championships at the Oleai Sports Complex, which featured national and junior records falling, medals won, and schools from Saipan, Tinian, and Rota pulling together in support of their athletes while still observing sportsmanship.
Heading the top athletes were Jeremy Winkfield of Marianas High School and Jackie Wonenberg of Hopwood Junior High School. The two bagged four gold medals apiece en route to claiming the meet’s Most Outstanding Athlete trophies, with Winkfield breaking the national record in the javelin and high jump, and the junior record in the discus and shot put.
Also taking the spotlight were the San Antonio 69ers cagers, who completed a perfect season with a thrilling 64-54 victory over defending champion G-Rollers in the Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League finals last Thursday at the Garapan Basketball Court. The two teams have dominated the 14-and-under scene the past two years, also meeting in last year’s finale. Taking third place was the San Antonio Sixers I while the Tanapag Warriors placed fourth.
The Saipan Ice & Water Co. Inc. 20th Anniversary Basketball League will soon crown a champion, the BANMI 25-and-under Basketball League will soon kick off its playoffs, and talks of starting the BANMI Budweiser Cup and Saipan Rotary Summer Youth Basketball League are already in the air.
Action on the diamond also continued with the ongoing Saipan Little League and Saipan Major League, while beach volleyball continues at the Pacific Islands Club.
