After months of scheduling, planning, and preparation, the Marianas Visitors Authority and Continental Airlines Taipei are celebrating the new Taipei-Saipan direct route by hosting a golf tournament for approximately 70 players from Taipei.

Beginning this Sunday, May 15, and continuing through May 17, the group of travel agents will wield their irons, drivers, and putters on two of the CNMI’s premiere courses—Laolao Bay Golf Resort and the Kingfisher Golf Links.

“Holding golf events provide visitors a reason to visit the islands and see what the destination offers for the golf travel market,” said MVA managing director Vicky Benavente.

As early as this past February, Continental Airlines Taipei invited a group of travel agents and potential decision makers from major golf associations to participate in the tournament, as well as to take part in a tour designed to familiarize the parties who are influential in developing packages with some of the CNMI’s best attributes.

Continental Airlines reinstated the Taipei-Saipan flights in November 2004, but before launching the twice weekly service, the MVA and Continental Airlines launched an aggressive marketing campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the CNMI as an attractive tourist destination for Taiwanese travelers.

“These joint marketing activities with Continental Airlines and the travel agents in Taipei will strengthen the CNMI’s presence in the market. In the future, we expect to support and coordinate more familiarization tours and events to build the Marianas-Saipan, Tinian and Rota as a preferred destination for golfers and their families,” she added.
