Iguel takes home WOR MVP hardware
Whether on the basketball court or Rocball floor, multi-sport athlete Pete Iguel works hard to make his presence felt.
Iguel’s latest accomplishment was earning the Most Valuable Player award for the playoffs of the recent World Organized Rocball High School League, and on Wednesday, he took home the shiny trophy to prove it to everyone.
The Marianas High School student was unstoppable during the best-of-five championship series, leading his Mwaliyas team to a 3-1 upset over powerhouse and pennant champions SKN.
The Gualo Rai resident connected for an ace and two xunks, but did most of his damage with kees and goals. The 16-year-old found the net of the goal five times in the series, two of which were hammered during the title clinching game, and put a hurt on the ball as a goalie for seven kills.
In all, Iguel accounted for 35 points in the series.
“I feel good that I got this award,” Iguel said during an interview yesterday. “I had a feeling I was going to get it because we won and I was hitting the ball really well, but I also thank my teammates for setting me up good. I really wanted the ball [set to me] because I was confident on my hits.”
Iguel said despite losing to SKN in their regular season meetings, he had faith that his team could take the coveted crown.
“I just told the boys that we can win if we have teamwork and we have good communication on the court,” he said.
Iguel said he would bring home the trophy to his mom, Lydia Iguel.
“She’s always happy for me and supporting me,” he said. “Every time I bring home a trophy, I give it to her and she takes it for her souvenir. It makes me happy to give her the trophy.”
Last year, Iguel took home the WOR Jam Blaster trophy.
He currently suits up for the Garapan Rollers in the ongoing BANMI 25-and-under Basketball League, and was a key force in the G-Rollers championship season last year in the Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League.
According to Iguel, basketball is his No. 1 sport, but Rocball and volleyball are not far behind and are his second favorites.
