MHS runs away with 18-and-under titles
The Marianas High School family dominated the show in Saturday’s 18-and-under competition of the McDonald’s All Schools Track and Field Championships at the Oleai Sports Complex.
The Dolphins had their shining moments in both the boys and girls corners en route to breaking records and taking top honors with ease.
The boys grabbed a whopping eight gold medals, eight silvers, and two bronzes to go along with two other top 6 finishes for a competition-best 159 points, while the girls earned seven golds, two silvers, two bronzes, and nine top 6 for a remarkable 124 points.
Placing second in the boys competition was Tinian High School with 55 points on two golds, two silvers, a bronzes, and five top 6, while Saipan Southern High School took the third place trophy with 47 points on four bronze and 10 top 6.
Hopwood Junior High School placed second in the girls corner with two golds, three silvers, and a bronze for 50 points, while SSHS followed with 41 points on three golds, a silver, three bronzes, and two top 6.
As reported earlier, the MHS boys attack was spearheaded by eventual Most Outstanding Male Athlete Jeremy Winkfield, who took four gold medals while breaking the CNMI National record in the high jump (1.95 meters) and javelin (52.51 meters), and the CNMI Junior record in the shot put (12.16) and the discus (30.59).
Taking silver in the high jump and long jump was Ricardo Basila of MHS while Jason Parr of SSHS took the bronze in both events. The long jump was won by Jesus Iguel of Chacha Ocean View Junior High School.
Jesse Atalig also took home hardwares for Tinian, placing second in the shot put and discus.
Meanwhile, Mario Patrinus of Kagman High School took silver in the javelin and bronze in the shot put, while teammate Jonathan Salas won bronze in the javelin. Sylvan Rangamar placed third in the discus.
The Dolphins also had a strong charge in the sprints, with World Youth Championships and World Championships-bound Darrel Roligat taking the 100m and 200m sprints, and Ivan Devero taking gold in the 400m. Devero placed second in the 100m and 200m while Roligat took silver in the 400m.
Bronze medals in the sprints went to Iguel in the 100m, Leroy Rangamar of SSHS in the 200m, and Leonardo Apelo of SSHS in the 400m
Mark Lero of THS showcased his strength in the middle distance races, taking home the gold in the 800m and 1,500m while Seth Hocking of MHS placed second in both races. Nate Mateo, also of MHS, was third in both events.
MHS also won the 4X100m relay while HJHS took the 4X400m relay.
Meanwhile, MHS got three gold medals apiece from middle distance master Bo Wang and thrower Lei Rangamar.
Wang topped the 400m, 800m, and 1,500m, while Wang Chang of HJHS took silver in the same events. Melissa Coleman of SSHS won bronze in the 800m and 1,500m while Myung Ho Ko of MHS was third in the 400m.
Rangamar took top honors in the discus, shot put, and javelin. Gloria Rogolifoi of KHS followed in both events GCA’s Rachel Rangamar took bronze in the discus and Raquel Ogumoro of KHS in the shot put. Rachel Rangamar moved up for a silver in the javelin while Nicole Ann Rios of SSHS took bronze.
SSHS also had three gold as Coleman raced to victory in the 100m, Maria Aldan recorded the best performance in the long jump, and Jhoanna Omar struck gold in the high jump.
Omar also had a silver in the 100m while Kayla Atalig of HJHS took bronze.
Atalig had her best outing of the day in the 200m and took the gold medal, while Ko won silver and Gersil Mendiola of MHS had bronze.
MHS won the 4X400m relay while HJHS smoked the competition in the 4X100m relay.
