Gill Faller won the A Flight of the Fil-Taga Golfers Association April Ace Tournament last April 17 at the Kingfisher Golf Links.

The 12-handicap Faller carded a net score of 65 to edge by two strokes runner-up Edgar Abalos, who wound up with a 67. Faller and Abalos, who plays with a 14 handicap, finished with gross scores of 77 and 81, respectively.

Third place went to Albert Pajarillaga, who fired a 70 after the 15-handicap golfer registered a gross of 85.

Closing out the top five in the A Flight were Rey Ferraz and Fil-Taga president Ted Malaran. Ferraz had a 72 (88 gross) and Malaran a 73 (88 gross).

The rest of the golfers in A Flight, with their net scores in parenthesis, were as follows: Jess Yumul (73); Sen. Pete Reyes (74); Will Maui (74); George Sablan (76); Ralph Yumul (78); Lito Mendoza (80); Douglas Puckett (83); and Mando Guban (83).

New members Joe Demapan and Tony Guerrero didn’t have assigned handicaps yet and finished with gross scores of 86 and 95, respectively.

In B Flight, Henry Bautista took the April title because the two players in front of him—Glenna Palacios and Father Manny Corcuera—already have hoisted the championship the two previous months.

Under Fil-Taga rules, a player can only win one monthly tournament in a season and the next lowest net score gets the monthly championship.

Palacios (February Ace) and Corcuera (March Ace) ceded the trophy to Bautista after carding scores of 65 (101 gross) and 69 (86 gross). Bautista finished with a net score of 69, the same score recorded by Tom Aguon, who lost via scorecard tiebreak.

Rene Batallones, Cesar Dumatol, and Freddie Cataluna came in third, fourth, and fifth officially with net scores of 70, 70, and 71.

The rest of the players in B Flight were: Greg De Torres (71); John Matsumoto (73); Nestor Siruelo (74); Ed “Puy” Macario (74); Nono Bostre (74); Jun “Tiger” dela Cruz (76); Mike Cruz (77); Harry Kang (77); Jhun Calma (80); Sandy Pallon (83); and Manny Po (94).

For more information on Fil-Taga and its monthly tournaments, contact Malaran at 322-1234 or 287-1227.

Established in 1993, Fil-Taga’s tournaments operate under a computer-controlled handicap system that creates parity among players in the A and B Flights.

A Fil-Taga Ace of the Month champion is crowned monthly. Regular tournaments are scheduled once a month, normally every third Sunday. Green fees are in the $35 to $40 price range for most tournaments.
