Comets crush Yankees, 16-3
The Comets saved their best for last against the Northern Yankees on Thursday night, as they turned a 7-3 lead in the top of the sixth into a 16-3 blowout in continuation of the primetime edition of the Big League at Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field in Oleai.
After trailing through two innings, the Comets got the production they needed from their power hitters and pitching staff, including a nine-run, five-hit sixth inning in which all but one of their players scored.
First baseman B.J. Nicolas was the crankin-est Comet at the plate, as the slugger smacked a double in the third and went yard with a three-run homer in the top of the sixth. Nicolas finished the day 2-for-4 to lead his team, as did Darson Camacho, who knocked a pair of singles, scored a run, and stole a base.
The hits kept coming for the Comets, as J.P. Sablan racked up two base knocks, scored a run, and stole a bag as well. Sablan finished the night with a solid 2-for-4 at the plate, but did most of his damage on the mound.
The pitcher threw a six-inning complete game for the Comets, and allowed only three runs off of six hits from the hill. After allowing two runs off of a couple of hits in the bottom of the first to put his team in a 2-1 hole, Sablan caught fire for the Comets, and went the rest of the way with only a run and four hits counting against him, and six punch-outs to his credit.
Neither team scored a run in the bottom of the second, but the Comets scored all of the runs that they needed in the third when Nicholas, Sablan, Camacho, and Guillermo Camacho crossed the plate to give them the 5-1 advantage.
The Yankees chipped away at the lead when Roger Sellem scored, but the Comets got that run back in their next at bat when catcher Pat Alepuyo took advantage of an error to streak across home plate.
The Comets added another in the top of the fifth when shortstop Oliver Sechamidal hit a sac fly to center that scored Dirk Magatas to give them a 7-3 lead, before the Comets went ballistic in the sixth.
