Individuals and groups are encouraged to join the various competitions during the Paskong Pinoy 2011 event.

The annual Christmas event organized by the United Filipino Organization will be held today at the Paseo de Marianas from 4pm to 10pm.

Olive Yana, UFO adviser and event committee co-chair, said yesterday that slots are still open for the individual singing contest for children 6 to 12 years old and for adults, the choral group contest, and the lantern making contest.

Yana said cash prizes await the contest winners. Individual singing winners will take home $100 first prize, $75 for second prize, and $50 for third prize. Group winners will take home $200 for the first place, $100 second place, and $50 third place.

For the lantern making contest, prizes are $250 for first place, $150 second place, and $75 third place.

“We invite everyone to join the contests for a chance to win our cash prizes,” Yana told Saipan Tribune.

Today’s event, Yana said, will also feature several performing artists and about 40 food and non-food vendors.

Yana added that they have invited a number of dignitary at the event.

UFO president Bong Malasarte, for his part, encouraged the entire community, especially Filipinos, to take part in the Christmas celebration.

While he noted that times have been challenging for the whole CNMI community, Malasarte said the public should still think about the many blessings they received, a good enough reason to be thankful this holiday.

“No matter how simple our celebration will be, we should put in mind the real meaning of Christmas and the lessons it teaches us,” added Malasarte.
