69ers win battle of San Antonio teams
The San Antonio 69ers are on a roll and continue to sport a perfect record, recording its fourth win in as many games last night with a lopsided 70-17 victory over the San Antonio Sixers II in the ongoing Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League.
The 69ers were hot from the start on both ends of the Koblerville Basketball Court, playing tenacious defense that limited the Sixers II to just two field goals while going berserk at the offensive end for a 20-4 lead after the first period.
The 69ers cooled off and managed to put up only six points in the second eight-minute stanza, however, their effort was still good, as the Sixers II matched their first quarter output of four points. At the break, the 69ers led by a commanding margin, 26-8.
Coach Ray Duenas’ crew got back to its no-mercy spree and showed no signs of slowing down. Despite posting the large advantage, the 69ers still had a lot of work cut out for them as Duenas called for their full-court pressure defense late in the second half that resulted in many steals, which were turned into uncontested layups.
Jake Sablan scored 20 points, 10 coming in the first quarter, to lead the 69ers while Bill Babauta and Matt Sablan added 12 and eight points.
Ervin Villegas paced the Sixers II with seven points.
Meanwhile, the Tanapag Young Warriors picked up their second win in three games after beating Hopwood Junior High School Saturday morning.
According to Division of Sports and Recreation staff Jovie Omar, the Young Warriors and HJHS were scheduled to go head to head in a make-up game at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, but the HJHS players had to forfeit due to the absence of the team’s coaching staff.
The IVYBL continues today as defending champion Garapan Rollers takes on HJHS at the Garapan Basketball Court, while the Matansa Sparks and Kagman battle at the As Matuis Basketball Court tomorrow. Both games are set to tip off at 6:30pm.
