53 DPS officers to get retro wage hike
Some 53 Department of Public Safety personnel will soon get retroactive salary increases that have been long overdue since they were promoted in rank last year.
Gov. Juan N. Babauta announced this yesterday in a brief ceremony attended by policemen at the DPS headquarters in Susupe.
The beneficiaries of the salary adjustments have ranks ranging from police officer II to major for the police department, and firefighter II to assistant chief of fire for the fire department. The police officers belong to different sections of the department, including patrol, traffic, bureau of motor vehicle, and criminal investigation bureau, among others.
“Those officers complained to the governor and the governor found a way to have the salary adjustments implemented,” said DPS commissioner Santiago Tudela, without elaborating. It was not known where the money was sourced from.
Tudela said he pushed for the implementation of the salary adjustments, saying that it was not fair for the government to withhold the officers’ wage increases that are due them by virtue of their promotion.
“As commissioner, I have to make sure that I go out and ensure that things are happening,” Tudela said.
Ranking officers who would benefit from the salary adjustment include police major Edward H. Manalili, the new CIB chief; police captain Pedro C. Muna, the chief of the Bureau of Motor Vehicle; fire captain Juan A. Pua; and Francis S. Taimanao, assistant chief of fire.
DPS spokesman Eric David said the recipient officers would get their back wages representing unpaid salary adjustments on Friday next week. The standard salary increase by virtue of promotion is 10 percent, David said.
