Marianas Cup opens up a can
The Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association held an open meeting on Wednesday night to discuss a number of issues regarding the future of the organization, as well as the finer points of this weekend’s 13th Marianas Cup Beach Volleyball Festival sponsored by Pepsi and Miller Lite.
The bumps, sets, and spikes got started yesterday at 4pm at the Pacific Islands Club, as the professionals put on a free volleyball clinic for everyone prior to exhibition matches that featured the pro players.
Individuals who registered for the beach volleyball tournament received a raffle ticket for a chance at landing one of the professional players on their team. During the exhibition match, the four pros were randomly divvied up to pair four lucky amateurs for the rest of the tourney.
According to NMIVA secretary Steve Nguyen, the action continues this morning with pool play, and roughly eight of the 24 men’s teams will be eliminated before the playoffs on Sunday.
Aside from being entered into the biggest volleyball tournament in the CNMI, players received a T-shirt, a ticket to the awards banquet on Sunday night, free drinks during event, and four raffle tickets towards prizes for their $60 registration fee per team.
