Former congressman Stanley Torres will run for a House seat this year and he will support the camp of gubernatorial hopefuls Reps. Heinz S. Hofschneider and David Apatang.

“I intend to seek a new term. I will run again,” said Torres in an interview yesterday.

Torres, a member of the 13th House of Representatives, sought reelection but lost in the 2003 midterm election under the ruling Republican Party.

Torres said he remains a Republican.

“I’m a Republican and you can say that I’m supporting Heinz-Dave team,” said Torres.

Hofschneider and Apatang earlier declared their independent gubernatorial candidacy after the GOP central executive committee declined to hold a primary and decided instead to endorse the re-election bid of Gov. Juan N. Babauta and Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente.

The party cited, among others, that Apatang is a non-GOP member.

The Heinz-David candidacy is being supported by other GOP stalwarts such as former senator Juan “Morgen” Tenorio, former congressman and former Babauta Cabinet member Thomas Pangelinan, congressman Jesus Attao, and businessmen Juan S. Tenorio and Roman Palacios. Other known supporters are Roman Tudela and Jose I. Guerrero, and Herbert Del Rosario.

According to Torres, “there are more people who are supporting the [Heinz-David] tandem.”

Torres, who had been vocal and critical of some policies of the Babauta administration, said he would officially declare his candidacy in the next couple of weeks.

This year’s election is expected to be a four-way fight among the Babauta-Benavente team, Covenant Party’s Benigno R. Fitial and Timothy Villagomez, Democratic Party’s Froilan Tenorio and Vicente Camacho, and the Heinz-Dave tandem.

Democratic Sen. Luis C. Crisostimo, who was earlier disqualified by party officials, has not ruled out running for the gubernatorial post.
