Man’amko to host ground golf tourney

The island’s elderly are planning to host a ground golf tournament at the Aging Center grounds on Dec. 27.
Aging program coordinator Walter Manglona said the entrance fee for tournament participants is $5 each for male congregates and $2 each for female congregates.
Manglona explained that the discrepancy is due to the fact that there are more females than males at the center.
According to Manglona, the tournament will be a fundraising event for the Saipan Seniors Advisory Council to augment their funds for their various programs at the center.
Ten percent of the total fee collection will go to the man’amko fund while the rest of the proceeds will be used as prize for the first, second, and third place winners in the tournament.
“That way, you don’t have to take money from your existing funds as prize for the winners,” said Manglona.
While they plan to solicit from local businesses for prizes or donations, Manglona disclosed that they are not expecting positive feedback since many establishments are barely making any profit due to the economic downturn.
“In this tough economy, it’s hard for businesses to stay afloat,” said Manglona.
The man’amko are also planning to hold an exchange gift among themselves on Dec. 22.
Saipan Seniors Advisory Council chair Teresita Sorroza urged congregates at the center to join the activity not on the basis of the amount of gifts but to be able to share with the other man’amko.
“It’s about the concept of sharing and having a connection. After all, you only pass this world once,” said Sorroza.
