Pete A. confirms re-election bid
Washington Rep. Pete A. Tenorio has affirmed his intention to run again for the same post in this year’s polls.
“I humbly request our party’s continued support and guidance as I wish to seek-reelection …this November and do hereby declare myself candidate for that office,” said Tenorio in a Jan. 25 letter to Republican Party chair Juan S. Reyes,
Tenorio described the office “as the most fulfilling and challenging office I have ever held.”
While positive development has taken place in the CNMI’s relationship with the federal government in the last three years, he said “there are many more issues that need to be pursued in order to provide permanent and institutionalized benefits for all of our people.”
He cited these include the approval of CNMI representation in U.S. Congress, more federal assistance to address water and other critical problems, and equity in many federal laws.
In fact, he said, “there are many in Washington D.C. who are unaware of our Covenant.”
“It will be my continuing mission to ensure that the people of the CNMI have their rights protected under the Covenant and represented in the nation’s legislative body,” said Tenorio.
Tenorio, who served twice as lieutenant governor during former Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio’s first two terms in the ‘80s, made a comeback in politics when he ran and won the Washington Representative post in the 2001 elections.
He was also one of the local leaders who negotiated the CNMI Covenant with United States.
