A 40-ft container of medical supplies and equipment, as well as schoolbooks and desks was shipped from Guam to Chuuk on Jan. 3 free of charge by Kyowa Lines and their local representative, Marianas Steamship Agencies Inc.

This represents $3,880.49 of services donated by the shipping firm.

Kwikspace Guam Inc. delivered the Kyowa Lines container to the Ayuda Foundation’s warehouse and returned the filled container to the port without cost to foundation.

The foundation, a non-profit organization that assists in the delivery of health care and educational supplies and equipment to the people of the Western Pacific, coordinated filling the container on Guam and overseeing the distribution of the cargo once it arrived in Chuuk.

The container carried six pallets of used textbooks (remains of the Alaska donation of textbooks in 2003) from Guam first lady Joanne Camacho for Chuuk’s Department of Education.

The Academy of Our Lady of Guam donated 100 used student desks to the Saramen Academy in Chuuk along with a pallet of religious teaching materials.

Locally donated goods aboard the Kyowa Salvia also included the donation by Dr. Darius A. Richardson of the Pacific Surgical Arts of a surgical procedures table and a defibrillator to the Chuuk State Hospital, as well as Guam SurgiCenter’s donation of surgical gowns and sterile bandages.

Hilton Guam Resort and Spa’s donation of window drapery, blankets, pillows and bed linens was also included.

The container also carried eight pallets of latex gloves, OTC medications, and surgical instruments that the foundation received from US-based non-profit organizations, which arrange collection and shipment of medical equipment to destinations outside the United States.

Chuuk Government Offices of Customs and Finance declared the cargo tax exempt and Chuuk TransCo waived all port fees.
