Attorney Michael White would be serving a second term as president of the Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association.

White, who represents the Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands in the NMASA board, was elected to a consecutive term during a special board meeting Thursday held at the White, Pierce, Mailman & Nutting Law Offices in Susupe.

The election was a virtual déjà vu in two levels. First, it mirrored the reelection of the entire board made in the first NMASA general membership meeting of the year last Jan. 6.

Second, the special board meeting on Jan. 20 also left untouched the entire slate of officers, as aside from White, former Superior Court judge and NMASA vice president Edward Manibusan, former Oleai Elementary School principal and association secretary general Jess Wabol, and treasurer Margaret Palacios also retained their posts.

Both Manibusan and Wabol represent the sport of golf in NMASA, while Palacios, who works at the court, is a member of the Saipan Swim Club board.

Other members of the NMASA board of directors are Jeff Race of the Northern Mariana Islands tennis Association, Robert Guerrero of the Saipan Softball Association, Russ Quinn of the Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation, Tony Rogolifoi of the Saipan Major League, and Louie Wabol of the Northern Mariana Islands Track and Field Federation.

Like the Jan. 6 general membership meeting, board members cited the need for continuity in retaining the current set of officers for NMASA.

NMASA is set to make the selection for Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year awards during the sports body’s next monthly general membership meeting on Feb. 3 at the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The annual NMASA Athlete of the Year banquet will be held on Feb. 17 at the Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach. A total of 29 athletes from eight disciplines are nominated to the yearly awards presentation.

Aside from the annual Athlete of the Year banquet, NMASA is also in the thick of preparations for the 2004 South Pacific Mini Games, set from July 25 to Aug. 4 in Palau.
