The local Republican Party has decided to create a committee to assess the credentials of its two gubernatorial candidates: incumbent governor Juan N. Babauta and congressman Heinz S. Hofschneider amid calls for a party primary.

“What the central committee had decided was to form a candidates’ committee to review the credentials,” said party chair John Reyes.

Reyes said the executive committee voted for former congressman William “Lee” Torres to head the review panel.

The committee is given two weeks to come up with its recommendation, which may include a position as to whether the party needs to hold a primary or not.

“They will report to the central committee,” said Reyes.

Torres’ committee will be composed of five members, including himself.

Meantime, Reyes said that precinct club chairpersons will submit their own recommendations on the local candidates’ lineup.

He said an initial list of party candidates was given out during the central committee’s meeting Wednesday night. He declined to identify the names of the potential candidates.

The party is divided on the issue of holding a primary, with some members citing party by-laws calling for such an action if there is more than one candidate.
