Top Pool Bar manager Zheng Jian Qing is hoping that the second time’s the charm.

After failing to create much of a buzz for pool tournaments last year, Zheng is bringing back billiards to Top Pool Bar starting with 9-ball competitions every Wednesdays beginning Jan. 26.

In cooperation with Pacific Trading Co. and its Miller Lite brand, the Top Pool Bar 9-Ball Open Tournament will start 13 days from now. Game time is set at 8pm and those interested must fork over $15 to join the pool-fest.

The slightly higher entry fee assures winners an also bigger payday, according to Zheng. The champion of the 9-ball event is guaranteed $150, while the runner-up won’t go home empty handed and receives $90.

According to Zheng, rules of the Billiards Congress of America apply for the competition. He said alternate breaks for players will be implemented and fishing and nine-ball-in-a-break are allowed.

He said good players would also be given handicaps to allow neophytes and average players at least a chance of upsetting the better players. Certified pool sharks would be given handicaps of five, while average players and newcomers need only four games under their belt to be declared the winner.

“I know that 9-ball is one of the more popular pool games on Saipan. I hope the Wednesday tournament would attract many billiards enthusiasts to Top Pool Bar,” he said.

Zheng further noted that the Wednesday tournaments could only accommodate a maximum of 16 players and entries would be on a first come, first serve basis.

As well as getting slots for the tournament, early birds also get a chance to practice for free on any of Top Pool Bar’s seven full-size billiard tables an hour before the competition.

Unlike other billiard halls on Saipan, Top Pool Bar boasts of 9-1/2-by-5-foot pool tables usually found in professional tournaments.

“We have the best tables on island. All of them are well-maintained and we don’t use coins to operate them,” said Zheng.

Top Pool Bar is located behind GIG Disco at the heart of the tourist district in Garapan.
