Flyers soar early in Crime Stoppers
With action from the first two days of softball in the can, the Master Construction Flyers found success early on in the 3rd Annual Crime Stoppers Softball Tournament by picking up wins over the Bad Boyz (18-8) and Natibu (7-3).
The pennant winners of the Island Wide Slow Pitch Softball League have carried over their success into the tournament at the Oleai Sports Complex on Friday and Saturday, but they still have to face some of the other top teams that stand in their way.
Bad Boyz dropped to the losers bracket of the double-elimination tournament, and staved off elimination in their following game by doubling up on A’s Canopy 14-7.
Much like the Flyers, the defending champion Brotherhood also found success early, as they knocked off X-Clusive in their opener 15-12, while the winner of last year’s Marianas Cup, No Ka Oi, started off with a 13-1 win over the Expos.
In a battle between the shoppers and the stoppers, the Duty Free Shoppers team bagged Team Para by a 9-5 score, while the Pacific Islands Club edged the squad from Laolao Bay 10-9, and Fotten Gaga notched a win over Naputi, 13-1.
The 12-team tournament which was created to raise funds for local volunteers to thwart ne’er do wells, has generated enough interest in the community to swell to a 14-team softball bonanza.
Prizes abound for all of the teams, and aside from the first place purse for the winners, there will be a trophy and $200 awarded to the first runner up, a trophy and $150 for the second runner up, and trophies for the third and fourth runner ups.
The champions-to-be will also be the first recipients of the new perpetual trophy. Organizers have also given a nod to the previous winners, as they will have their names affixed to the trophy as well.
