A man was killed and another seriously injured after their vehicle ran off the road and crashed into a concrete wall and power pole early Friday morning, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Police spokesman Eric F. David reported Friday that the driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old male, sustained a fractured skull and multiple fractured bones to the right side of his body while the 51-year-old male passenger sustained lacerations on both legs.

David did not disclose the identity of the victims, but indicated that it would be announced at a later date.

Both were transported to the Commonwealth Health Center. The driver, according to David, died at 12:38pm that afternoon while in the Intensive Care Unit. The passenger was admitted for further observation.

The cause of crash has yet to be determined and is still being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Unit. The report did not indicate if alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.

David said that at about 6:43am, an unidentified female called the DPS emergency 911 and reported the auto accident in front of Toys 4-U along Middle Road, Gualo Rai.

Traffic investigators revealed that the vehicle, a silver 1990 323 Mazda four-door sedan, was traveling north on the inner lane. The vehicle moved to the outer lane and ran off the road, crashing into the wall.

“The vehicle continued to skid off the wall heading straight to a power pole where it finally rested,” David said.

David said T.I.U. further stated in their report that after the crash, the Toys 4-U establishment burst into flames.

The extent of the damage the fire caused to the establishment or the power pole was not disclosed.

A security guard from a poker establishment across the street extracted the victims out from the vehicle to a nearby bus shelter and waited for police assistance.

Medics were also dispatched to the scene and transported the victims to the hospital.

The incident is the first traffic-related fatality for the year. Last year, DPS recorded nine fatalities, two more than numbers in 2003.

David said that of the nine fatalities, seven of the cases were alcohol-related. In 2003, five of the seven fatal crashes involved alcohol.
