The NMI Council for the Humanities has announced the appointment of Paz C. Younis as its new executive director.

Council chair Dr. Elizabeth D. Rechebei said Younis’ appointment was effective Dec. 27.

Younis comes to the Council with extensive administrative and management experience in the field of education and federal grants. She began her career as a classroom teacher at Marianas High School in 1970, and then moved on to serve as director of the Northern Marianas Academy and vice principal of Hopwood Junior High School.

During the 1990s, Younis was acting principal of Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary and principal of William S. Reyes Elementary. For the last two years, Younis directed the Commonwealth’s Head Start Program during which she oversaw improvements that allowed the program to move from deficient to non-deficient status in a short period of time.

Rechebei noted that the Council was fortunate to have an executive director with Younis’ experience. “We are a small organization but one with an important mission. Mrs. Younis brings a valuable perspective on the humanities to our Council.”

The Humanities Council is a private, non-profit corporation established in the Commonwealth in 1991. It is affiliated with and receives annual grant support from the U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities and donations from the general public.

The Council’s mission is to foster awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the humanities through support of educational programs that relate the humanities to the indigenous cultures and to the intellectual needs of the people of the Commonwealth.
