A chorus of “Bye! Thank you!” went up as students waved goodbye to the hundreds of Japanese exchange students who paraded their way out of the Garapan Elementary School. These children happily shook hands with equally enthusiastic Japanese kids and, although the language barrier was very much evident, both groups of students made do with hand gestures, still managing to communicate with smiles on their faces.

The festive Wednesday morning was the 20th Annual CNMI/UHB Japan Student Exchange Program, which was attended by some 500 Japanese students.

Saipan’s active and energetic elementary students welcomed the visitors and the exchange program, which had the theme, “Bridging Cultures and Friendships,” was on.

“It’s always been nice to see these students take time for this event,” said Dan Dan Elementary School principal Jonas Barcinas, who spearheaded their school’s delegation. “I know it’s pretty hard for them since it’s a holiday and a vacation for these kids.”

A cultural presentation was held, with the Japanese kids showcasing their own art and crafts. Local students did not let the event pass without sharing their skills in dancing. As the event closed, local students queued up to receive gifts from the exchange students.

The Japanese students in return received gifts such as shell leis, Saipanda pins and Saipanda dolls, courtesy of the Marianas Visitors Authority. Pacific Development Inc., DFS Galleria and the Chamolinian Cultural Village also provided local handicrafts as part of the presents for the student visitors.

A total of nine schools attended the event: the San Antonio, Koblerville, Garapan, Dan Dan, Tanapag, Kagman, William S. Reyes, Oleai, and Tinian elementary schools.

The Japanese students attending the annual event were part of the UHB seminar for boys and girls. The students traveled to Saipan to meet with other elementary students and learn about the CNMI’s culture and traditions.

The delegates arrived onboard M/V Fuji Maru early Wednesday morning and were greeted by the local students. The event was co-organized by PDI.

The delegates visited Managaha Island yesterday for a day of revelry under the tropical sun. (Marconi Calindas)
