29 more temblors jolt Asia after 9.0-strong tremor
Twenty-nine earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 5.4 to 7.3 shook several portions of Asia in a single day after the 9.0-strong quake that triggered tsunamis in at least six Asian countries and left thousands of people dead.
The United States’ National Earthquake Information Center also recorded a 4.5-strong quake on Rota, which occurred around 11:56am last Wednesday. The quake had a depth of 42.7 kilometers.
Before the intensity 9.0 quake off the coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia—the strongest earthquake in the world in the last 40 years—the series of tremors in Asia begun on Christmas Day in Java, Indonesia. That quake measured 4.6 on the Richter scale.
From the occurrence of the 4.6-strong quake until yesterday, the NEIC has recorded at least 31 earthquakes in different portions of Asia.
The epicenters of some 18 earthquakes were located in India, while those of 12 other quakes—including the one that had record-breaking intensity—were located in Indonesia. An earthquake measuring intensity 5.8 jolted the Philippines’ Mindanao archipelago.
The strongest of the quakes that followed the 9.0-strong quake measured intensity 7.3. The NEIC said the quake, which had a depth of 10 kilometers, occurred at 4:21am (GMT) Sunday in Nicobar Islands, India. That quake preceded an intensity 6.1-quake that shook the Andaman Islands, India less than an hour and a half earlier.
As of press time, the latest earthquake recorded by the NEIC happened in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia and measured 6.3 on the Richter scale. The quake, which had a depth of 10 kilometers, occurred yesterday at 9:39am (GMT).
