Cabo Boat captain Heinz Hofschneider and anglers Tony Flores, Nobert Diaz, Pat Diaz and Juan Tenorio were recently commended for capturing third place in the Skip Jack Category of the 20th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament.

Hofschneider and his anglers received $500 for their achievement.

In a resolution adopted by the 8th Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council, it said members of the council and the people of the CNMI join John M. San Nicolas, president of the Saipan Fishing Association, in extending special recognition, congratulation and commendation to Hofschneider, Flores, Nobert Diaz, Pat Diaz and Tenorio and wish them the best as they prepare for the 21st edition of the tournament.

The 20th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament kicked off on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Saipan Smiling Cove Marina after being postponed due to Supertyphoon Chaba’s devastating effect to the CNMI.

Some 94 boats from Palau, Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan participated in the challenge to catch the winning prizes in each category before the time deadline on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004.

Guam Charlie Cat Boat captain Dr. Hoa Van Nguyen and anglers Jesus Curo and Quane Ly caught a monster marlin at 519.40 lbs; and Grand V’s Boat captain Ray Dela Cruz and anglers Joe Guerrero and Joe Reyes caught the biggest/heaviest Yellowfin at 55.07 lbs.

Despite these, Danny Agulto’s record in the Bill Fish Category in 1997 at 624.43 lbs, and James Taitano’s record in the Yellowfin Category in 1990 at 106 lbs remained the standing records to break.

The resolution was certified by municipal council chair Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero and vice chair David A. Indalecio and attested by secretary Antonia M. Tudela.
