Donn Dunlop and Gabriel emerged from a pack of 18 teams last Saturday to become the champions of the two-person division 9th Annual BSEA Rudeger Volleyball Tournament at the American Memorial Park.

The duo of Dunlop and White didn’t lose once in the daylong competition, and netted $280 for their efforts after defeating Russ Quinn and Bill Owens in the finale 15-5.

Just a week before the tournament, Dunlop and White were on opposing sides of the courts when their teams faced each other in the championship game of the 2004 Miller Four Person Beach Volleyball League at the Pacific Island Club.

When the two standouts joined forces in the Rudeger, it was too much for the competition to handle, but they weren’t the only team raising eyebrows with their excellent play.

A strong showing from teammates Chris Nelson and Mark McDonald was cut short when McDonald suffered a back injury to force the forfeit to Quinn and Owens in the third place match.

In the ladies division, Linda Anastacio and Laura Burley smoothly sailed through their opponents, as the tandem didn’t lose a match all day. They capped off an untarnished tournament showing when they defeated Aleta Glaze and Ericka Tomatsu 15-7 in the final.

As the popular tournament transitioned to the second day of events, the athletes were able to relax and enjoy a one-day round of mixed four person teams that were drawn randomly. The bizarre was the norm as players were penalized for positive play. Some of the talented players were hampered by goggles with blackened eyepieces, masks, boxing gloves, dresses, flippers, and an assortment of items designed to level the playing field.

Tournament director Jon Cramer termed the championship game as an “epic battle” between the Unknown Soldiers and Jon’s Driving Us Home, in which the Jon’s prevailed by a score of 15-11.

Jay Worrall, Linda Anastacio, Danny Daniel, and Kaycee Rengular managed to overcome their artificial handicaps against the Soldiers, while third place went to Fatty Tuna.

This was the ninth installment of the annual event, and BSEA Sunsports in association with Miller and Verizon helped to raise $250 for the Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association.
