Mobil starts construction of $2M Kagman station
Official groundbreaking ceremonies were held yesterday for a new $2-million Mobil service station in Kagman.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held at the construction site at the intersection of Isa Drive and Kagman Road, marked the start of the Kagman Mobil Service Station. The new facility will be the oil company’s twelfth station on Saipan.
“Mobil is pleased to add the Kagman station to its network of service stations. We would like to thank the government agencies who worked closely with our project engineers to ensure that the construction plans are balanced with the location’s environmental surroundings,” said Jeff Borja, president of Mobil Oil Marianas Islands Inc. “We look forward to being the newest member of the Kagman community when our site opens in early 2005.”
The service station will be the first constructed in the Kagman area and will feature a convenience store.
Borja said Mobil started planning the project two years ago, ensuring that it was economically viable and securing necessary permits from regulatory agencies such as the Coastal Resource Management and the Division of Environmental Quality.
He said environmental concerns raised by the agencies included the construction site being a potential wetland area. He said modifications had to be made to the project design in view of this concern.
Speaking on behalf of Gov. Juan N. Babauta, Commerce Secretary Andrew Salas welcome the construction of a Mobil station in Kagman. He said the service station is a much-needed facility in the developing community, which has seen the addition of schools and a community center only recently.
