SCC begins search for 2004 Business Person of the Year
The Saipan Chamber of Commerce has begun the search for its businessperson of the year.
The Chamber has been distributing nomination forms to its members and has set the deadline for submission of nominations on Dec. 31. The winner will be honored during the Chamber’s Installation Dinner in January, when a new set of officers officially assume their posts.
Christine Parke, the Chamber’s executive director, said that the organization has received two nominations so far. She refused to reveal the identities of the nominees and the industries where they belong.
The Chamber’s businessperson of the year award creates a roster of select local businessmen who have made significant and distinct contributions to the community.
Criteria for selection to receive the award include community involvement and contributions, business longevity, response to adversity, support for local workforce, and active participation in the Chamber.
In January 2004, the Chamber honored businessman Jerry Tan as its 2003 Business Person of the Year. Tan, the executive vice president of Tan Holdings Corp., oversees non-apparel companies of the holding company, which does business in 14 industries in the Western Pacific.
Tan is vice president & director of Asia Pacific Hotels, which owns the Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach and Guam Dai-Ichi Hotel. He is also president and CEO of the CTSI Logistics Group, a company founded on Saipan, which today has offices in 19 countries. He is a director of the Luen Thai Group, a global conglomerate specializing in apparel manufacturing, logistics services and software development.
Tan is also the president of the non-profit Tan Holdings Foundation, a director of the NMI Chapter of the American Red Cross, president of the Saipan Bowling Association, and president of the Northern Marianas College Foundation. (John Ravelo)
