GOP’s Felipe Atalig assumes new post
Felipe Atalig, the newly elected committeeman for the Republican National Committee, has stepped down from this post to assume as executive director of the local GOP party.
Atalig said his time and energy would be better maximized as the party’s executive official in view of the upcoming general elections. He said party chair John Reyes asked him to assume the new post.
“We are concentrating on the 2005 elections to assure the victory of the Republican Party. The goal is to have a repeat of the 2001 victory,” said Atalig.
He said the party’s members would have to elect again a new committeeman to replace him.
The party recently elected Atalig and Mary Lou Ada as committeeman and committeewoman for the RNC. Under the rules, the local party, which is now a full-pledged member of the national party, has to elect two members—one male and one female—to act as representatives in the national committee.
The elected committeeman and woman would act as members of the board of directors of the National Party, which meets twice a year “to give direction to the party.” Committee members have a chance to participate and vote on RNC budgets and policy resolution.
RNC members also meet once every four years to agree and nominate candidates for GOP president and vice president.
Atalig said that, in his capacity as executive director, he is expected to make recommendations to the central committee.
When asked, he said that the party has not made a decision on the possibility of having a primary.
GOP member Rep. Heinz Hofschneider has teamed up with Rep. David Apatang to challenge incumbent Gov. Juan N. Babauta and Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente in a primary for next year’s gubernatorial poll.
