Do you know any schoolchildren? Have you ever wanted to help their school but didn’t know how? Well, here’s your chance! All you have to do is bring your cans and paper products to the DPW transfer station to recycle…it’s not only good for the schools, it’s good for the environment too!
The Division of Public Works is running a number of events in conjunction with America Recycles Day, an annual national day that promotes recycling awareness.
On Monday, Nov. 1, DPW announced the beginning of its first-ever recycling competition for all public and private schools. Students, their parents, friends, and relatives, are all encouraged to recycle their aluminum cans and paper products at the transfer station in Lower Base. Anyone with a load of cans or paper to recycle can select a school to benefit from their donation. Schools will compete for cash prizes of up to $500, plus they will receive the refund of 20 cents per pound of aluminum recycled. The competition will run until the evening of Nov. 11, and the winners will be announced at an ARD event at the transfer station on Nov. 15.
The recycling competition is just one of a number of activities being run in conjunction with ARD. Individuals can also get in on the fun by signing a pledge to recycle. Pledge signers will be entered into a raffle to receive one of a number of fabulous prizes, to be awarded on Earth Day next April.
For more information on the recycling competition, ARD, or the pledges, contact Rob Jordan or Rick Dela Cruz at 322-2745. And be sure to check this page out next week to see how your favorite school is doing, and how you can participate in the events.
