Buenaventura to step down after this year
Filipino-American Tennis Association president Eli Buenaventura said he would not seek reelection when his term ends at the end of the year.
Buenaventura made the announcement during Saturday’s 2004 Shell-Telesource Open awards banquet held at the American Memorial Park tennis courts. The general manager of Calvo’s Insurance said he would leave it to the “young blood” of the sports association to carry on his programs.
He earlier said that the 2004 Shell-Telesource Open concludes FILATA’s events calendar for the year since the AMP will be renovating all four current courts as well as building two new ones.
The FILATA president also told members that the election for the 2005 officers of the tennis club would push through as planned in the middle of December.
Buenaventura also took time to thank people instrumental in making the 2004 Shell-Telesource Open a success.
He first thanked corporate sponsors Shell Marianas and Telesource CNMI, which were ably represented by Shell area retail manager Jeff Boyer and Telesource comptroller Raul Purification during the awards banquet.
He also personally extended his appreciation to FILATA officers and members Art and Gina Lopez, Boyet and Joy Minor, Alex Martin, Nanding Cajigan, Jun Villanueva, Romy Sotto, and Edwin Maratas for donating their valuable time and effort during the tournament.
Buenaventura thanked them for their patience and initiative especially during the time when the 2004 Shell-Telesource Open was plague by cancellations due to rain and brownouts. Originally planned as a two-week event, the tournament stretched to three weeks because of the aforementioned factors.
He also bid the Ashraf family good luck and bon voyage, as Dr. Mohammad Ashraf, his wife Verna Felipe, and their daughter, youth netter Kanani, are all set to leave Saipan and settle in Hawaii by the end of the year.
The outgoing FILATA president also expressed his gratitude to door prize sponsors Hyatt Regency Saipan, Bank of Hawaii, and his very own Calvo’s Insurance.
