The State Board of Education has adopted regulations requiring public school teachers to take and pass the PRAXIS test by Aug. 31, 2006.

In a public notice, BOE chair Roman C. Benavente said the amendments to the BOE regulations regarding teacher certification, which were published in the Aug. 26 issue of the Commonwealth Register, have been adopted with minor modifications.

“All teacher applicants and current teachers, upon renewal shall submit proof to PSS that he or she has received a passing grade on the PRAXIS core knowledge examinations. The PRAXIS requirement shall apply to all K-12th grade level teacher applicants and all current teachers for these grades, except related service providers,” a portion of the new regulations read.

Under the new policy, BOE will decide whether or not to renew a teacher’s contract based on their score in the PRAXIS test.

PRAXIS testing will be offered to teachers and teacher applicants beginning in school year 2004/2005.

All newly recruited PSS teachers for SY 05/06 will be required to have taken and passed the test in order to get hired. All current PSS teachers whose contracts expire after Aug. 31, 2005 will be required to take and pass the examinations prior to contract renewal.

Beginning Aug. 31, 2006, all PSS teachers should have taken and passed the PRAXIS test.

“[The] board has fully considered all written and oral submissions respecting the proposed amendments. In addition to the publication notice in the Commonwealth Register, the board circulated the proposed amendments regarding PRAXIS testing to all schools and presented the testing requirements to employees during professional development and staff meetings,” Benavente said.
