Palau comes out with draft calendar
The organizing committee of the Palau 2005 South Pacific Mini Games has come out with a draft calendar for the quadrennial event set from July 24 to Aug. 4, 2005 at the island republic
The opening ceremonies on July 24 at the National Stadium will welcome delegations from different island nations and countries in the South Pacific. The next day, action will start for athletics, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, swimming, softball, and tennis.
Athletics would go on for the next six days at the National Stadium, while swimming will be on for seven days ending on Aug. 1 at the Meyuns Swimming Pool.
Baseball and basketball is expected to finish on Aug. 3 and 4 at the Asahi Baseball Field and National and National and PHS Gymnasiums, respectively. Beach volleyball (PPR/Airai Side/Koror Side) and softball (Meyuns Softball Field) will follow the schedule of basketball with tennis (PPR/Airai/Ngerbeched) expected wrap up the same time as baseball.
Weightlifting is slated to push off on July 26 and will go on for the next three days at the Kalau Gymnasium. Table tennis will literally pick up where weightlifting will be leaving off. Ping-pong starts on July 29 and is expected to end on Aug. 3 also at the Kalau Gymnasium.
A bigger paddle will be in action as the three-day outrigger canoe competition sails off starting on July 29 at the Meyuns Ramp. Wrestlers will have their time on the mat on Aug. 2 and 3 at the Midszenty Auditorium.
Last but not the least, triathletes get to test their endurance at the K-B Bridge/Koror Side on Aug. 3. Closing ceremonies for the 12-day sporting extravaganza is on Aug. 4 at the National Stadium
This will be the seventh staging of the South Pacific Mini Games. The first six stagings of the regional sports competition were Honiara in 1981, Raratonga in 1985, Tonga in 1989, Port Vila, Vanuatu in 1993, American Samoa in 1997, and Norfolk Island in 2001.
Incidentally, the CNMI won its first medal in the Norfolk South Pacific Mini Games when the triathlon team led by Stephan Samoyloff snagged a bronze medal.
