Pangelinan does well in South Pacific pageant
Miss NMI South Pacific 2004 Louiena Ruth Leon Guerrero Pangelinan is scheduled to return to home soil tomorrow night after doing her part in serving as an ambassador for the Commonwealth at the recent Miss South Pacific Beauty Pageant 2004 in American Samoa.
The Northern Marianas College student shined during the pageant Oct. 29 and was crowned 3rd Runner-Up. She also bagged special awards as Miss National Tourism and Miss Personality, which she shared with Miss New Caledonia Marianne Fedronie.
Crowned Miss South Pacific 2004 was 24-year-old Miss Nuie, Sinahemana Hekau, while First Runner-up honors went to Miss Cook Islands Noovai Karen Tyler and Second Runner-up Miss American Samoa, Trixi Theresa Taua.
In all, seven beauties took part in the annual event. Other participants included Fourth Runner-up Miss New Caledonia Marianne Fedronie, Miss Tonga Telesia Malia Kaitapu, and Miss Western Samoa Saifaleupolu Tamasese.
Other special awards included Miss Internet, won by Miss Tonga, and Miss Photogenic won by Miss New Caledonia. Category winners included Miss American Samoa for Best Sarong and Miss Cook Islands for Best Traditional Wear and Best Talent.
The 20-year-old Pangelinan and other participants had a week to rehearse for the pageant. Activities, including island tours, a parade, and receptions with dignitaries, began on Oct. 24 and concluded on Oct. 30.
Pangelinan is scheduled to arrive onboard Continental flight 9602 at 8:20pm Wednesday.
“We would like to invite everyone to come down to the airport to welcome her back,” said Celia Mercado, Pangelinan’s adviser.
Pangelinan was crowned Miss NMI South Pacific 2004 earlier in the year at the Northern Marianas Beauty Pageant at Hotel Nikko.
Last year, the NMI was represented at the South Pacific pageant by Olivia A. Tebuteb, marking the first time an NMI representative took part in the event.
The South Pacific pageant was first launched in 1986 and crowned its first Miss South Pacific winner in 1988.
The pageant promotes the unique cultures, people, and environments within the South Pacific.
