Hot lunch for a cause
Non-profit group MOVER urged the public to support its fundraising activity at the Kilili beach pavilion today, the proceeds of which would support future cleanup projects.
MOVER chairman Jun Lapeceros said the group would sell packed lunch at the pavilion. For only $5, the lunch set includes rice, two viands, softdrinks and dessert, according to Lapeceros.
MOVER organized the fundraising activity following the recent completion of a major drainage cleanup project, which it accomplished with other volunteer groups affiliated with the Environmental Interagency Cleanup Operation Team.
Last Sunday’s cleanup became the 11th Sunday that volunteers from MOVER, KAMPIL, CNMI POWER, and Bicol Association went out to pick up trash and clear stormwater drainages in northern Saipan.
Lapeceros said about a hundred volunteers joined the cleanup event, including members of the Filipino Club of Marianas High School. He said about 15 students participated in the cleanup.
In all, volunteers finished cleaning up nine stormwater drainages—plus beach sites—from Garapan to San Roque. Last Sunday, they focused on drainage sites in San Roque and the American Memorial Park.
Lapeceros expressed the volunteers’ gratitude to those who supported the cleanup project, including Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente, members of the House of Representatives, the Coastal Resources Management Office, Pacific Trading, DFS Galleria, and Tanapag residents. Oil giant Exxon/Mobil provided a $5,000 grant for the project.
