Jun Calma and Tom Aguon booked an invite to Fil-Taga Golf Association’s season-ending Golfer of the Year Tournament after topping the A and B Flights of last Sunday’s October Ace Tournament at the Lao Lao Golf Resort west course.

Calma finished atop the leaderboard in A Flight after carding a net score of three-under par 69. A handicap-16 player, Calma fired a gross score of 85.

Three strokes behind and settling for second was Gil Faler. Faler finished with an even-par 72 on the strength of his 12-handicap after scoring a gross score of 84.

Mando Guban was on third place, coming up with a net score of one-over par 73 following a gross score of 87. Wilhelm Maui and last month’s A Flight champ Sen. Pete Reyes were tied at the fourth and fifth places with identical two-over par 75s. Maui had a gross score of 87, while Reyes posted an 88.

The rest of the participants in A Flight, with their scores in parenthesis, were as follows: George Sablan (76); Lito Mendoza (77); Jess Aldan (78); Ralph Yumul (79); Douglas Puckett (80); Rey Ferraz (82); Ted Malaran (82); Mike Cruz (84); Netsor Siruelo (84); E. Abalos (86); and Candido Castro (88). Abalos and Castro are new members and played without handicaps.

Aguon, for his part, won bragging rights over in B Flight after scorching the field with a net score of six-under par 66. A 23-handicap golfer Aguon had a gross score of 89. Nono Bostre was runner-up after shooting a four-under 70, while Ernie Lopez’s one-over 73 was good enough for third place.

Jun “Tiger” Dela Cruz and Edgardo “Puy” Macario completed the Top 5 in B Flight with identical two-over 74s.

The rest of the participants in B Flight, with their scores in parenthesis, were as follows: Domeng Cariaso (75); Father Manny Corcuera (77); Sandy Palon (79); Cesar Dumatol (79); Greg De Torres (85); Glenna Palacios (86); Freddie Cataluna (96); Rene Batallones (114); and John Camacho (108). Cataluna, Batallones, and Camacho are also new members.

Established in 1993, Fil-Taga’s tournaments operate under a computer-controlled handicap system that creates parity among players in the A and B Flights.

A Fil-Taga Ace of the Month champion is crowned monthly. Regular tournaments are scheduled once a month, normally every third Sunday. Green fees are in the $35 to $40 price range for most tournaments.
