Nike, GM eyed to invest in NMI

House Ways and Means Committee chair Ray Basa (Cov-Saipan) said yesterday that part of his pro-active stance in helping to grow the CNMI economy is formally write to Nike, General Motors, computer or computer part manufacturers and other internationally known brands to set up business on the islands.
“It doesn’t hurt to try to entice these international manufacturers,” said Basa.
The freshman lawmaker added that he will follow up on earlier plans to entice garment manufacturers to set up shop on Saipan, this time mainly to manufacture garment for the U.S. military.
Basa said Saipan already has the facilities, as well as the manpower, to establish a smaller-scale garment industry. Saipan used to have some 30 garment factories manufacturing products for brands such as Levi’s, Gap, Guess, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Polo Ralph Lauren.
Delegate Gregorio Kilili Sablan (Ind-MP) could also help the CNMI, he said, by tapping federal agencies that could provide technical assistance to CNMI’s existing and would-be entrepreneurs.
Postponed leadership meeting
The planned joint Senate and House leadership meeting today has been postponed.
Senate President Paul Manglona (Ind-Rota) confirmed that the Senate has asked for the postponement because most senators won’t be able to attend as a result of prior commitments.
Manglona said he asked House Speaker Eli Cabrera (R-Saipan) to reschedule the joint meeting next week.
At the planned meeting, both camps are expected to identify priority bills and initiatives that need to be passed this year.
