‘Bush-Kerry’ debate tomorrow at NMC
Organizers of the mock presidential election at the Northern Marianas College will be hosting a debate among the “candidates” tomorrow at the college.
NMC political science class instructor Sam McPhetres said the debate—which is open to the public—will be held in room D1 on Oct. 23, from 5pm to 7pm.
Representing the Republican Party and President Bush will be Gov. Juan N. Babauta. Sen. John Kerry and the Democrats will be represented by NMC’s own Danny Wyatt. Representing Ralph Nader and the Reform Party will be Gregorio Sablan.
“Each one will represent the national platform and, to the extent possible, where such national policies may impact on the territories. Everyone on Saipan is invited to attend this presidential style debate,” said McPhetres in an e-mail.
The simulated presidential election will be held next Saturday, Oct. 30, throughout the Commonwealth.
Presidential voting in the simulated election will be held from 8am to 7pm. On Rota, it will be held at Room H2 on campus; on Tinian, at the community gym; and Saipan, at the community room of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library. All persons registered in the Commonwealth as of Sept. 12 this year will be eligible to vote.
On Saipan, a special box will be set aside for unregistered but otherwise qualified voters to cast their votes, which will be counted separately.
Counting will commence as soon as the polls are closed and the results will be publicized immediately.
“We are hoping for as large a turnout as possible so that we can get a message out to the mainland that we count too,” McPhetres said. “This is a chance to show your faith in the democratic process.”
This project is being sponsored by the Northern Marianas College political science class PS 110 and carried out by the students at all three campuses.
