Parents as Teachers and the Ayuda Network recently donated 24 books to the Children’s Collection at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library.

Heidi Yelin, a PAT certified parent educator, presented the books to CNMI librarian Kevin Latham and children’s librarian Janice Sablan.

For the past three years, Yelin has conducted reading and storytelling sessions at 10:30am on Thursdays at the library to help promote early literacy.

All of the books donated are bilingual: they are either English and Chinese or English and Korean. Some of the books are Board Books, suitable for the youngest child under one.

Titles donated include Clifford, The Big Red Dog and Smile and Peek-a-Boo, two from a series of books featuring photos of multi-cultural babies.

“Parents as Teachers encourages parents to speak their first language to their child,“ says Yelin, a parent educator of five years. “To further encourage bilingual language skills, it is important for the child to see books in both languages. Ayuda Network and Parents as Teachers had the opportunity to purchase some Chinese/English and Korean/English books, so we got them to help our library build their bilingual collection.”

Parents as Teachers is a parent education and family support program serving families throughout pregnancy until their child turns 3. Parents are supported by PAT-certified parent educators, such as Yelin, trained to translate scientific information on early brain development into specific when, what, how, and why advice for families. By understanding what to expect during each stage of development, parents can easily capture the teachable moments in everyday life to enhance their child’s language development, intellectual growth, social development and motor skills.
