Man caught for alleged theft of over $700 in equipment
Police took a man into custody Thursday afternoon for allegedly stealing equipment and vegetables worth over $700.
According to Department of Public Safety public information officer PO2 Eric F. David, the suspect, Benjamin Rios, was apprehended after a brief chase from As Terlaje to a residence in Fina Sisu. He was arrested for reckless driving, theft, and possession of a controlled substance.
David said police received a call from 30-year-old Zi Jian Han at about 1:24pm reporting that he needed assistance in apprehending a suspect involved in a burglary and theft incident.
The victim was by the New Fresh Market when he contacted police and told them he was following the male individual.
“The victim further stated that the suspect was on a gray 4X2 pickup truck and was traveling south at a high rate of speed,” he said.
David said that while information on the vehicle was being transmitted, a patrol officer traveling down the hill on As Terlaje spotted the vehicle and noticed it was still traveling fast and was maneuvering between vehicles. He then turned around and pursued the vehicle.
David said police later found out through the victim that a police report was filed on Monday, Oct. 11, regarding the burglary and theft incident and that he has been tracking down the suspect since.
The victim said Rios allegedly stole a bush cutter worth $497, a skill saw valued at $120, an electric drill worth $95, and 40 lbs of vegetables worth $24.
