Secretary of the Navy to visit Guam
The Secretary of the Navy, Gordon R. England, is scheduled to arrive on Guam on Oct. 14 to meet with commanding officers and sailors of Navy commands on island.
U.S. Naval Forces Marianas Commander Rear Adm. Arthur J. Johnson has invited England to attend the U.S. Navy’s 229th Birthday Ball scheduled for Oct. 15. The Secretary of the Navy will have the opportunity to interact with sailors, U.S. Coast Guard members, and local government and business officials.
In addition, England will be the guest speaker at the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Sequoia commissioning ceremony, which will be held Oct. 15 at 10am on Naval Base Guam. His wife, Dotty England, is the sponsor of the cutter.
Also attending the ceremony will be Guam Delegate Madeleine Bordallo; Guam Gov. Felix Camacho; Coast Guard District 14 commander Rear Adm. Charles Wurster; and Rear Adm. Johnson. The 22-person ceremonial Seventh Fleet Band is scheduled to play at the ceremony.
England is the 73rd Secretary of the Navy. He is only the second person in history to serve twice as the leader of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps, and the first to serve consecutive terms.
In his position of authority, he is responsible for conducting all the affairs of the Department of the Navy; overseeing the construction, outfitting, and repair of naval ships, equipment and facilities; and formulating and implementing policies and programs that are consistent with the national security policies and objectives established by the President and the Secretary of Defense.
