Yell Ngaang downs Mix-A-Lot in BSL
After being one of the top teams all season long, the Verizon Mix-A-Lot were eliminated from the playoffs of the Belau Softball League by the D.O.K. Yeel Me Ngaang on Saturday morning, losing 13-12 and 23-22 in two exciting games of slow pitch.
The top four finishers from the regular season went head-to-head in a best-of-three series that featured the Verizon Mix-A-Lot, D.O.K. Yeel Me Ngaang, the Rep. Ada Hitters, and Ode’s Angels on Saturday, Oct. 9, to determine who would advance to the finals next weekend
The first game went down to the wire, but it started off roughly for Mix-A-Lot. Heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, the ladies in gray were trailing 11-3. They were able to chip away at the deficit with a run in the fourth and the fifth, but the blue clad Yeel Me Ngaang scored twice in the top of the sixth to erase the effort.
The Mix-A-Lot offense erupted for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to draw within one run of Yeel Me Ngaang at 13-12, but that was as close as they would get.
The Mix still had a shot at advancing in the playoffs if they could win the rematch, and they were just one inning away from doing so.
After leading from the start of the game, Mix-A-Lot scored four runs in the top of the seventh and final inning to increase their advantage over Yeel Me Ngaang to 22-13, and were just three outs away from forcing a rubber match next Sunday.
It all began to unwind for Verizon as Yeel Me Ngaang led off the with a base hit to start their at bat. The babes in blue never stopped hitting en route to scoring 10 runs off of 11 consecutive singles to end the game, 23-22.
In the other match up, the Rep. Ada Hitters and Ode’s Angels split their pair of games to force a one game showdown next Sunday for the rights to face Yeel Me Ngaang.
The Hitters took the first game by storm as they fired out as many runs in the first inning as the Angels would score all game. They took a 6-0 lead in the second and never looked back, as the Hitters piled on the lead with four runs in the third and another cuatro in the sixth to win the first game 14-5.
In the rematch, the Hitters found themselves on the right side of the win-loss column when the Angels broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning to even up the series. The time has not yet been determined, but action will continue in the third and deciding game on Sunday, Oct. 17.
