UFO takes weekend off
After an exhaustive playoff run, the 2004 UFO-San Miguel Cup will take a breather this weekend to prepare for the finals tiff between defending champion Visminda-Country House and three-time titlist SIP-Verizon.
According to league organizers, the match between the two basketball heavyweights will resume next Sunday, Oct. 17, beginning at 6pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Visminda has a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals after sweeping the eliminations and playoffs – a winning streak of nine games.
The championship will be preceded by a 3-point shootout and an awarding ceremony. Both are expected to kick-off at 3pm. League officials, however, are careful to point out that some of the major awards will be handed out only after a 2004 UFO champion has been crowned.
Players who will participate in the rainbow shootout are Cabalen-RP Construction’s Paul Magcalas, Visminda’s Dado Vistal, SIP’s Brian Flores, FASA-PABA-CNC Inc’s Jhun Estolas, MAFILWA-McDonald’s Joseph Achas, Laguna-GE Pawnshop’s Randy Arconado, Cavite-Pacific Islands Club’s Raymond Tolentino, and Bicol-Sabungero’s Jun Miday.
Team that have yet to submit the name of their entries are SMF-Seabridge, MDX Amateur Radio Club, LIPS-Jam Construction, and Bartenders-Alleviera Sports Bar. Players competing in the 3-point contest should be in complete uniform.
A day before the finals begin on Oct. 16, Saturday, the UFO-San Miguel Cup will stage the battle for third between Cabalen-RP Construction and FASA-PABA-CNC Inc. also at the same venue. Game time is set at 6pm.
League officials also said that they would continue to charge a $1 entrance fee for both the third place and championships matches. Only players seeing action for the day and children under 12 years old are exempted from paying the gate.
According to league officials, the entrance fee will be donated to the Ada Gym for its upkeep and maintenance, specifically to fix the leaking ventilation system on the roof.
In related news, the UFO will hold a thanksgiving Mass this coming Sunday, Oct. 10, 10am at the San Antonio Church. The Mass will also pray for the successful staging of the championship, awarding ceremonies, and third place match.
